New Balance rewards Cumberland Trace students with new shoes

Students roared and cheered at Cumberland Trace Elementary School on Thursday morning after their school was recognized for its efforts to promote physical activity through a walking and running club.

Nate Whitman directs the Billion Mile Race for the New Balance Foundation. After creating a winning video in a social media contest to promote their walking and running club, all students will receive a pair of New Balance running shoes (nearly 600 pairs). Students have logged nearly 7,500 miles since September, when the New Balance Foundation Billion Mile Race kicked off to promote increased physical activity in schools.

“You guys are not only doing an awesome job here in Kentucky, but you are leaders all across the country,” Whitman told students.

In the winning video, students show off morning runs and other efforts to stay active during the school day. They go the extra mile by walking for charity campaigns such as Walk 4 Water and Relay for Life.

“We started the New Balance Foundation Billion Mile Race for one reason,” Whitman said. “We wanted schools all across the country, the entire United States, to have a walking and running club just like what you have here.”

While students have been adding up miles, Whitman said, there are 5,000 schools around the country also doing miles through their own run clubs.

Whitman said Cumberland Trace’s entry stood out among the hundreds of entries submitted.

“Your video was chosen as the absolute best because it showed the great work that you do,” he said. “We think that when we put that video up online and show other teachers and students and parents across the country, they’re gonna be so inspired by the fun that you have here.”

Physical education teacher Amy Oliver, who helped create the video with her student teacher, received her own pair of running shoes for her effort.

“With the Billion Mile Race it’s all about setting goals and trying to achieve them,” she said. The school achieved its goal this year with 7,439 miles.
